MIM-contracted driver Lirim Zendeli arrives at the legendary Autodromo Nazionale Monza this weekend for the high-speed slipstreaming finale of the 2024 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup with the intention of concluding the prestigious one-make support series for eight European Formula 1 Grands Prix in the best possible way on a track that is particularly congenial to him.
The Supercup has been a completely new experience for Zendeli, who has had to rapidly learn the ropes – as well as get to grips with a 500+ hp Porsche 996 GT3 Cup machine and familiarize himself with a completely different style of close-contact racing against category veterans and champions – in his debut season in covered-wheel GT racing, having so far competed in single-seater formulas in the seven years since his debut in 2016.
The final round at the Temple of Speed therefore brings an end to a hard-fought championship for the 24-year-old Ombra Racing charger, who is lying twelfth in the overall standings, with a best result of P8 at Silverstone. In the more representative Rookie ranking he is fifth, with just a few points separating him from Theo Oeverhaus in P4 and Mathys Jaubert in P3, so a P4 final Rookie position in his debut season is surely within reach.
“I’m very happy to be here at Monza, it’s a feeling I don’t get very much in some different tracks. I’m happy to be on track every time but especially here, it’s a good vibe,” declared Lirim. “With my results from the past in the single-seaters, I’m really looking forward to see what I can do with the Porsche. Unfortunately I missed the testing because I was very sick when we were having the test day, nevertheless I think it’s going to be a good weekend and I feel good.”
The final race weekend of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2024 gets underway with practice on Friday evening at 6:30 pm (CEST), while Saturday’s Qualifying Session at 10:55 am (CEST) will determine who starts from the best grid positions in Sunday’s 15-lap race at 12:05 pm (CEST).
