The 2024 FIA Formula E title battle enters uncharted territory this weekend as MIM’s contracted driver Pascal Wehrlein takes a narrow two-point lead in the standings to the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Italy’s Adriatic Riviera for the next double-header round of the all-electric world championship.
After five city street events in Rome, this year Formula E goes back to the confines of the permanent Misano circuit for the Italian round in Season 10, a race track with which the 29-year-old German-Mauritian is familiar, having raced there before in the German Touring Car Championship.
Despite this previous experience, the TAG-Heuer Porsche driver is under no illusions about the challenge he faces as he defends his lead against his closest rivals, four of whom have also won once in the five races held so far this season.
Pascal Wehrlein declared: “The pace was good throughout the weekend in Tokyo. We have to build on that in Misano. The track has fewer bumps and faster corners than a street circuit. I’ve raced there before in the DTM but it’ll be a completely different story in a Formula E car. This will be an important weekend because there are two races and thus double the points up for grabs. The fact that I’m leading the drivers’ standings shows that we’re doing a good job as a team. But we’re aware that the season is still long.”
For its Misano debut, Formula E will make use of 80% of the layout normally used for MotoGP, with the elimination of the first newer sector and the addition of a chicane on the back straight. As a result some fast exciting racing is guaranteed around the 14-turn 3.381 km circuit, a factor that might just play into the hands of the factory Porsches.
The busy weekend schedule sees Free Practice 1 on Friday afternoon, then FP2, Qualifying and the Round 6 race on Saturday, with FP3, Qualifying and the Round 7 race on Sunday.
Stay tuned to our social media channels or follow Pascal live on TV worldwide as Season 10 of the electric Formula E series continues at Misano.
