Following on from his IMSA pre-season test at Daytona in November behind the wheel of the customer JDC-Miller MotorSports Porsche 963, it can now be confirmed that the factory Porsche driver and reigning Formula E world champion Pascal Wehrlein will be one of the drivers of the US-based squad for the 59th edition of the iconic endurance race in January.
The German driver, contracted to Monaco Increase Management, will as a result make his IMSA debut on January 25/26 and at the same time compete in the 24 Hours of Daytona for the first time in the yellow Porsche GTP car.
“I’ve always wanted to drive sports cars – that’s one of my goals as a racing driver,” declared the Formula E world champion. “Now I have the opportunity to prove myself there too. I’m very happy about that! The test drives with JDC-Miller MotorSports in mid-November went well. The Porsche 963 reminded me of the DTM cars of my time – I felt comfortable. I’m currently recovering from my accident in São Paulo. But I want to get back to full speed in January.”
This will be Wehrlein’s first race experience at the wheel of the championship-winning 963 machine, the German having already familiarized himself with it during its development phase with a collective test at Sebring in October 2022, while November’s outing on the banked Daytona International Speedway prepared him for the experience of tackling a classic round-the-clock endurance race for the first time.
Pascal, who will travel directly to Florida from the second round of the FIA Formula E World Championship in Mexico City on January 11 to the “Roar before the 24” pre-tests, will share the #85 Porsche with Dutchman Tijmen van der Helm and American Bryce Aron.
