Pascal Wehrlein returns to his Monaco Increase Management’s home base this weekend as FIA Formula E World Champion for the Monaco E-Prix, the sixth and seventh rounds of the globetrotting all-electric World Championship. The 30-year-old German is in a confident mood following his excellent win in the last round at Homestead-Miami.
Three weeks ago, Pascal bounced back into contention on the mixed oval/road course in Florida with a controlled and strategic race that propelled him into third place overall in the standings after five rounds.
This weekend’s appointment with the narrow Circuit de Monaco street circuit in the Côte d’Azur Principality is the special ‘jewel-in-the-crown’ event for the all-electric championship, but the MIM-contracted driver is under no illusions about the difficulties posed by the 3.337 km Formula 1 Grand Prix layout, and freely admits that qualifying on the front rows of the grid and a small dose of luck will be key factors in the double-header races on Saturday and Sunday.
“As athletes, Monaco is a highlight for us drivers,” declared the factory TAG Heuer Porsche man. “Because the track is so prestigious, everyone pushes that little bit harder than at other circuits. Despite the fact that the track is so unforgiving. We’re hoping to be strong in qualifying again. In addition to strategy, the Monaco race involves a bit of luck because the narrow track means that good pace is not enough. I was able to take advantage of the complicated situation in Miami to score a good win, so hopefully we can go well again in Monaco.”
Formula E in Monaco reverts to a two-day, two-race format with free practice early on Saturday and Sunday mornings, qualifying on both days at 11.00 and the races getting underway in the afternoon at 15.05.
