MIM-contracted driver Pascal Wehrlein had to miss the end-of-season FIA Awards Ceremony gala evening on Friday in Kigali (Rwanda) on the advice of his doctors, who cautioned him against flying to the event following his incident in Sunday’s Formula E race in Brazil.
The reigning world champion was left trapped inside his inverted Porsche 99X Electric at Turn 6 of São Paulo’s opening round of the season after being pitched into the barriers by Nick Cassidy (Jaguar), with the car remaining upside-down momentarily before the emergency team could reach it.
Luckily Pascal was able to be extricated without any injuries but he was given the all-clear after being taken to the medical centre for further checks.
As a justifiably precautionary measure, this week his doctors advised him not to fly to the African country to pick up his Formula E title-winning trophy together with all the other FIA champions.
Instead, the German sent along a pre-recorded video message: “Unfortunately, I cannot be with you tonight due to the crash I suffered last week, I didn’t get the permission to jump into a plane, but I’m doing okay, and I am recovering from it. I want to congratulate all the teams and all the drivers for outstanding performance in 2024 and I wish you all the best for next season. I hope you have a great evening without me, and I’ll see you soon.”
