WEHRLEIN EMERGES UNHURT FROM SCARY INCIDENT IN FORMULA E OPENING ROUND

Dec 7, 2024

Pascal Wehrlein emerged unscathed from a spectacular incident during the opening Formula E race of the season at the São Paulo Sambadrome, after being flipped into the wall by Nick Cassidy with just a few laps remaining.

Coming out of the slow-speed turn 2 the Jaguar driver damaged his suspension in a contact with DS Penske’s Max Guenther and was pitched into Pascal’s Porsche, wedging underneath and overturning the German, who flipped into the wall and came to a halt a further 50 metres down the track, but upside down. Once again, the HALO safety cage did its job and the MIM-contracted driver first signalled he was OK to his TAG Heuer Porsche pits and on live TV before stepping out of the car unhurt.

Until then Pascal had been running an intelligent race from pole position. Despite losing out to Rowland (Nissan) at the start, he was always able to remain in contention, taking the lead for a short period, and then using his Time Attack strategy – this year with all-wheel-drive added to the 350-kW power boost – to such good effect that he powered up from P10 to first in the space of just two laps.

Good teamwork with his brand mate Antonio Felix da Costa kept both Porsches in contention until the later stages, before the incident sent last year’s world champion Wehrlein home from this opening round of the season with just 3 points for his pole position.

Irrespective of the exciting, action-packed race, which was won by Mitch Evans (Jaguar), what is important is that Pascal came away from Brazil unscathed after a competitive race and is ready to continue his 2025 campaign in the best possible way.
