MIM driver takes both wins on his Eurocup F.Renault debut weekend
David Vidales’ new adventure in the Eurocup Formula Renault series couldn’t have had a better start. After missing the first round altogether, the 18-year MIM-managed rookie from Leòn, Spain won both races at the Imola round, which already makes him a serious contender for the final crown. Never before had a driver with no single-seater races under his belt obtained such results at his debut in the prestigious one-make series, which, years ago, had promoted such talents as Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton. Vidales did it on Saturday with the perfet hat-trick (pole position, 1st place and fastest lap) and topped it off on Sunday by winning the second race after qualifying second, behind JD Motorsport team-mate William Alatalo. Vidales’ scorching start (which had been carefully studied and planned the night before) put him in the lead straight away, and he managed to keep a comfortable margin despite one caution period (same as had happened the day before) which brought the 20-car pack back together between laps 5 and 7.
David’s performance has impressed many an insider from the Renault Eurocup world, particularly because, despite his age and relatively scarce experience, he was able to keep a cool head throughout the challenging racing weekend. Now he will take advantage of the long summer break to further improve in the process of acclimatization with the team, before the next round which is scheduled at the Nurburgring between September 4th and 6th.
