Le Castellet (France) November 14/15 – MIM driver David Vidales wrapped off his maiden season in the Formula Renault Eurocup series by scoring point in the two final events of the championship on the iconic Paul Ricard circuit. Once again, the JD Motorsport-backed Spanish driver was more impressive in the races than he had been in the qualifying sessions, that followed the ‘inverted’ format already seen this year. So Qualifying 1 – in which Vidales could do no better than P13 – determined his start position for Race 2, whereas the second lap time chase was the basis for the grid of Race 1 and gained him a 9th slot.
On Saturday, Vidales attacked right from the start, got squeezed between another driver and the edge of the track, had to cut across the runoff area but managed to rejoin in sixth place, then yielded one position and finished the race in P7. Race 2, on Sunday morning, could have ended even better as David’s scorching start allowed him to gain three positions in a matter of seconds. Shortly after, though, Saucy’s car span just before him and Vidales had to swerve to the left to avoid him, running off track and rejoining the pack in P14. From there, he quickly worked his was back to 11th, then halfway through the race he won his battle for tenth with De Wilde and eventually, in the closing stage of the 30-minute (plus one lap) event, he managed to pass Cordeel for ninth place.
Overall, David scored 164 points (despite missing the two opening races of the series) and finished the season in sixth place.
