MIM driver Pascal Wehrlein has arrived in Tokyo for Saturday’s first-ever FIA Formula E World Championship event to be held in Japan, where he aims to claw back further points from leader Nick Cassidy (Jaguar).

Pole position and a fourth place on the São Paulo street circuit two weeks ago in Brazil meant that the 29-year-old German-Mauritian was able to close the gap at the top of the table to four points as the globetrotting all-electric series heads into the busiest part of the season, with five rounds and eight races in the next two months.

“The race in Tokyo promises to be a real highlight. We’re all excited about visiting the country and the city – and of course, seeing the absolutely brilliant Japanese racing fans,” declared Pascal. “After the long break, São Paulo was a positive start to the season for us. We earned critical points for pole position and fourth place, which is very motivating for the busy weeks ahead. It means we spend a lot of time in the car and do a lot of racing – and that’s great.”

For its debut in Japan on Saturday, the Formula E race will again be another in-and-out affair held almost entirely over 24 hours around the metropolis street circuit laid out on the waterfront of Tokyo Bay around the Big Sight convention centre, the country’s largest sports venue. The 20-turn, 2.582 km track is a classic Formula E layout, with numerous tight 90° corners and three longish straights, all of which promises some exciting racing.

The weekend schedule sees Free Practice 1 on Friday in Japan, then FP2, Qualifying and the Race making up a packed programme on Saturday.
