Another strong performance from MIM’s Formula E driver after software issues led to grid penalty

Pascal Wehrlein finished the second event of the New York ABB FIA Formula E round in eleventh place, just short of the points wone, after taking a well-deserved 6th place (following Mortara’s penalty for yellow flag speeeding) in the previous race. But the Monaco Increase managed 27-years old driver has nothing to blame himself for as he really gave it all after starting from 20th on the grid. Wehrlein’s low grid position came as the result of a penalty imposed by the race direction following a software issue in the Sunday morning’s qualifying session. Wehrlein’s Porsche rode over a bump and this caused a malfunction, actuallly giving its Porsche 99X car more power than it was allowed by the qualifying rules. This meant that Pascal had to work his way up the field once again, and he did so, by overtaking Günther, Rowland, Mortara (who later came back to him under extra power), Giovinazzi and Di Grassi. In the final stages of the race – which featured only one 8-minutes ‘attack mode’, unlike Saturday’s two – Wehrlein attacked and passed Oliver Askew and Sergio Sette Camara, before having to dodge a massive pile-up of cars which virtually put the race to a premature end. Wehrlein is still ninth in the standings with a total 63 points and only two rounds remaining, in London and Seoul.
